day #6 - the mercedes no longer under a tree
the saga is coming to an end. the tree was removed from the mercedes last night and a guy is on the way to take the car away and give me a little money for my troubles. it's an inglorious end for a car that's been in the family for 28 years and that i have a lot of great old memories of (and some new ones). however, while my dreams of giving this car to my boy in 16 years is falling by the wayside, i can take heart in the fact that this was a great car with a great life!

day #5
so i have been in new york all week at the web 2.0 expo and i assumed i would come home to louisville tonight and there would not be a tree on my car. as of this morning, there is still a tree on the car. apparently they did come by last night and cut all the big branches off so that the you could drive on the street, but they left the masterpiece of "car on tree" in full effect.
i'm hoping at some point today they take the tree off the car, but we still haven't found someone to take the car (that we want to have it), so i they want to leave in on the car through the weekend, i guess that is ok.
one bright spot of the day - i shared a cab with The Fake Steve Jobs (Dan Lyons) to the javitz center. he is speaking as part of the keynote today at the web 2.0 expo and i mentioned i saw him speak at the web 2.0 expo in san francisco this past april. he laughed and said his presentation today will see eerily similar. very nice guy - had a great conversation about print and online convergence. i told him next time he is in kentucky to give me a call...

day #3
it's day 3 and the mercedes is still under a tree. i of course am in new york at the web 2.0 expo and have left my wife and little boy at home to deal with the car. unfortunately with the tree still there, we can't do much, and all the car guys want to do is take it and strip it down. this may be what happens, even though that is not my first choice. here's another choice picture of the car:

the mercedes is under a tree
its the name of the blog so i guess i should start with it, my mercedes is under a tree. it feels to good to say it out loud. . .
i live in louisville, ky and we caught a nice chunk of wind from hurricane ike this past sunday (9/14/08) which knocked out phones and power, and knocked down a ton of trees, including the one on my car.
its not just any car of course - its a 1981 mercedes 300d with 150k miles that my grandfather gave to my grandmother when he retired from wells fargo in '81. She drove it until the early 90's, when it was passed onto to my dad, who then passes it on to me this past july.
now, it is under a tree. the big question now is what to do? do we restore it or junk it? the consensus seems to be junking it so we are looking for someone who appreciates this mint car to take it off our hands. so if you are looking for a slightly used classic mercedes that needs a little body work, then this car is for you!
